On October 1, 2017, our school,  St. Augustine was declared first in the four-day high school art competition held at Markham Fair. The artwork was titled “Pillars of the Past, Hands of the Future, Stronger Together”, showcasing the work of over 400 St. Augustine students and winning 1000 dollars to be donated to Markham Stouffville Hospital. All contributing students, as well as Ms. Fabroa, held hope to reclaim ourselves from last year’s loss.

The art featured the pillars form the previous year as well as newly placed images of Canadian history to showcase bringing our past contributions into the present. In previous weeks, students were seen cutting and pasting away in the art hallway. It was uncommon to see a picture of Trudeau or black and white images of past Canada suddenly find its way onto your uniform. Ms. Fabroa told us after the win:  “I’m very glad and proud to have seen such a success throughout the four day fair within our St. Augustine community. The project was not simply made by a few individuals but multiple classes; it was a unified community within the art students who have all come together to create something for such a good cause. All funds won are to be given to Markham Stouffville hospital”.
As parts of the display accompanied us on Muskoka endeavors and were featured in art shows, this piece truly held the spirit of our students. In the first few weeks of school, our art department was able to not only create this piece of impressive nature but to claim first! The win not only brought together a big red bow and 1000 dollar cheque to pair with the vibrant pillars but our new and returning students with pride.
