The tennis team was off to a great start at the tournament on Thursday, October 5th. The team played strongly together, fighting their way to the top. Our star player, junior student Shirley Liang played for the senior single girl’s team, winning first place as a tenth-grade student.
The tennis club consists of two subdivisions. The first one, called the high school draw is for casual tennis players. The open draw is for students who have played and won at least two rounds in a three star or greater tournament. The high school tournament draw played their tournament on September 26th, while the open draw went to their tournament at the Marilyn Redvers Tennis Centre in Aurora. They played and won against other teams, including students from Brother Andre on October 5th. The team consisted of 12 to 20 players from Grades 9 to 12 who all played well in the tournament.
One of the players on the tennis team, Shirley Liang talked to us about the team. She said that she started off playing baseball, but later switched to tennis and continued to play, building her skills over the years. With years of practice and dedication, Shirley has participated in several tournaments with many more to come. She even managed to make it onto the Ontario ranking, coming in 76th place in all of Ontario. Shirley is scheduled to go to Peru for tennis nationals later in the school year.
Remember Shirley’s quote in times of doubt.
“If you fail, never give up. Always get back up on your feet.”
