The holidays can be one of the most expensive times of the year for all of us. From preparing turkey dinners to buying the latest gadgets, things can get very expensive. Whether you have tons of friends to shop for, or only have a part time job, there are numerous ways you can make everyone on your list happy while saving money. While doing so, remember to make use of lists, make gifts yourself, use coupons, start early, and be conscientious of the gifts you are giving. There are so many methods that can be implemented to be more responsible financially during the holiday season.

1. Create a Budget
Prior to heading to the mall, set a budget for yourself and stick to it. Once you have determined a limit that works for you, divide it amongst the people on your list. It’s okay for one person to have a greater limit than another. You may find it helpful to pay using cash instead of a credit card. By withdrawing a certain limit in cash, you are more aware of how much you are spending and are less likely to spend more than expected.

2. Start Early
There are plenty of sales leading up to the holidays such as Black Friday or Cyber Monday. By shopping during these times, you can save yourself stress and money. In addition, ensure you make use of sale sections, coupons, and deals. Stores like Bath and Body Works often have buy three get three free deals. Ensure you capitalize on these sales to save your money. By starting early, you are able to wait for sales instead of having to buy full priced gifts at the last minute.

3. Do Your Research
Before buying a gift, make sure you are getting it at the best price. Stores like Winners or Marshalls often have high quality items at discounted prices. By doing your research and comparing prices at various stores, you can ensure you are not overspending.

4. Finding the Right Gifts
To avoid buying impulsively, create lists of the things you want to gift. Where applicable, consider purchasing one large gift for the family instead of gifting multiple individual gifts. This could include a family laptop or even a game console if it’s within your budget. Remember that people may be happier receiving one big gift as opposed to five little ones. Planning ahead is essential in saving money.

5. Do it Yourself
Consider making your own gifts this holiday season. There are plenty of videos on YouTube and articles in magazines that can help you create some breathtaking gifts. By making gifts yourself, you can make them more sentimental and thoughtful. Things like photo albums, memory jars, letters, or desserts in a jar can be extremely meaningful. The receiver will undoubtedly appreciate the thought and effort that went into the gift they have received.

Overall Tips:

  • Use lists
  • Set a budget that works for you
  • Make gifts yourself
  • Combine gifts
  • Make use of sales
  • Shop at better stores

By planning ahead and thinking about ways to maximize your budget, you can improve your Christmas shopping dramatically. Always remember that the holidays don’t need to put a hole in your wallet. This holiday season, make everyone on your list happy by implementing these few tips. Sometimes, the best gifts don’t have to be the most expensive ones.
