It’s fast approaching; the most wonderful time of the year.  Notoriously called the month of madness, December is the ‘time’ when we dust off our boxing gloves, roll up our sleeves, and head into the shopping ring, otherwise known as the mall. In the blink of an eye, shoppers make daring moves towards the latest deals, score points (on credit cards) and demonstrate fearsome shopping prowess as they swipe their cards at face value to a ‘holiday victory.’

With Black Friday just having recently passed, and Boxing Day lurking at the corner, purchases are flying off shelves. In the heat of the moment, however, shoppers may be bringing home more than they asked for…

Just how much did Canadians spend this year on Black Friday alone? Well, a recent survey completed by the savings website, RetailMeNot.ca, revealed that individuals were planning to spend an average of $1,400 per person, with $653 of this amount being reserved for the purchasing of gifts. With our country’s general spending average reaching almost $1507 per shopper, the numbers make our high and large spending habits clear. Meanwhile, with the influence of social media tapping into our holiday desires, it is no surprise that Boxing Day is expected to be even more on the ‘wild’ side.

How did the students and staff respond to such insanity? According to eleventh grade student, Angelica M., “if you are not careful, you might be trampled,” so, as she advises, “bring a protective shield!”

“I find it unsettling that people trample one another for sales exactly one day after Christmas; a time dedicated to being thankful for what they already have”– Emily S., Grade 12

“Black Friday is a bit of a disappointment. I ended up doing more exercise than buying anything and the sales weren’t the best. The fact that some people get injured as a result of Black Friday is incomprehensible to me.”– Antonia P., Grade 12

“I don’t have time for that. Getting into university is more important.”- John A., Grade 12

“My feet hurt and so does my wallet.”- Natalie Z., Grade 12
