As the the day we all love draws closer, winter crosses our minds. Some may dread it, others may be excited. I was inspired to write this poem as a little nod to the Game of Thrones meme and our feelings towards the jolly season.

Winter Is Here
By: Catherine D.

Summer was precious while it lasted, the remains of the golden sundrops on my tongue, disappearing instantly in just one gulp.

All summer long we were out in the sun and rain laughing, ignoring any sign of a cold.

Feeling the gentle breeze as it blows onto our skin, sending our hair flying with the birds in the sky.

It was a wonderful moment.

A moment that came to an abrupt stop.

Suddenly the sun’s warmth turned cold, its glare sent shivers up the spine.

The warm, misty rain turned hard and was freezing, we all hid for cover under our umbrellas, no longer wishing to jump in inviting puddles.

The breeze lashed out like a whip with thorn spikes, ripping our skin to shreds.

And we became so sick and stuffy we were miserable, our life became a living nightmare.

Then we realized.

Winter was here.

It was here in the park, the schools, even in our heated homes.

The wind howled outside my frosty window, crying in anguish.

Begging me to open the door to let it into the warmth of our fireplace.

When I was outside when it was -30 degrees, the strong winds would knock me down into the snow.

My body would shiver, my bones would rattle. Little fragments of ice would appear on my hollow cheeks and my lashes. Frozen tears leaked from my eyes as I cried for the hot air of summer.

Alas my wish shall not be granted.

For Winter is here

And has just begun.
