Chinese New Year is coming up February 16th 2018, which brings the Year of the Rooster (雞) to an end. As we look forward to the Year of the Dog (狗), Titan Times would like to share some fascinating facts about Chinese New Year.

  • “December” 28th of the 12th lunar month (年廿八)
  • Tradition of cleaning the house

February 15, 2018

  • New Year’s Eve (年三十晚)
  • Enjoy a reunion dinner with the entire family

February 16, 2018

  • Chinese New Year (初一)
  • Not allowed to take a shower as people believed that it will wash away the good luck

February 19, 2018

  • Do not visit people on the third day (easy to argue with people)

February 23, 2018

  • Everyone’s birthday (人日)
  • The Chinese government is not allowed to execute people on the seventh day

March 2, 2018

  • 15th day of the new year – Chinese Valentine’s Day – the end of the Chinese New Year celebration  

General Facts

  • Red represents good luck, energy, and happiness
  • Ancestor worship is important
  • Watching the lion dance is a common tradition
  • Red envelopes with cash are exchanged and given out from older to younger individuals (sending good wishes and luck)
