Click, clack… zip! If you happened to drop by our school library recently, whether it was to study for a test or scout for a new read, you may have encountered (or at least heard the sounds of) St. Augustine CHS’s very own typewriter! If you haven’t, then you’ll definitely want to make a stop to see it for yourself this week. The chunky, rounded, cream-coloured device has made itself at home right above the magazine shelf, greeting library-goers with the familiar QWERTY keyboard on an antique-looking machine. In the last couple weeks, it has been catching the attention of curious students and teachers alike. Lucky for all, the typewriter in our school’s library is fully functioning and available for use, which means you can not only witness the technology of the past, but also experience it. Don’t let looks fool you; it may seem intimidating at first, but rest assured, it’s pretty simple to use. A word of warning, though: If you tend to make typos, be prepared to restart your work many, many times–typewriters don’t have “backspace” keys!
