On April 6, 2018, a school bus carrying a team of high school hockey players crashed into a truck killing 16 people and sending the rest to the hospital. In remembrance of this tragic accident, schools nationwide decided to hold a jersey day on April 12. This initiative started from a group of parents in B.C. to honour this team.
Thousands of Canadians participated in this day and our school took part in it as well. Jerseys were seen throughout the halls as students and teachers showed their support. Not only in Canada, but in countries like Switzerland, Singapore and many more held out their sticks and wore jerseys for the lives lost.
We asked our librarian, Ms. Young, about her thoughts on the tragedy.
How do you feel about the lives lost in the accident that happened last Friday involving the Saskatchewan hockey team?
It saddens and breaks my heart how an entire community has been devastated by this event, but I’m happy that it brought everyone together. Not just in that community, but it brought the nation and the world together.
What did you think of the jersey day today? Were you surprised at the amount of people that wore a jersey today?
I loved that we did it! I loved seeing the spirit within our school and it surprised me to see all the Toronto Maple Leaf jerseys!
Do you have any words of support for the victims’ families?
I think that we should remember all of the good things that have come out of this, how it brought many communities together and to embrace the memories of the lost people.
Many people showed their support for this hockey team and them wearing jerseys was proof that this school is always taking action in even in the saddest times for our countries.
