When the Titans Carnival carved its way through St. Augustine on September 27th, students and even teachers abandoned their desks, chairs, textbooks, and ever so burdening question of day one or two to instead be immersed in spirit and pure fun.

On a Thursday afternoon students became sumo wrestlers, often finding their greatest battle to be maneuvering the suit itself.Their faces were dyed with not only laughter, but explosions of colourful dust. Students filled their afternoons with bouncy castles, committee booths, and food trucks whose presence announced themselves in wafts of delicious aromas, and rare sights. Games of tug-of-war, and jousting competitions scattered the carnival floor for the afternoon.

For teachers, not much was different. Willingly, Mrs. Chiaravalloti, Mrs. Iorio, Mrs. Morassutti, and a plethora of others placed their fates in vengeful students while a bucket of water hung above them. Many met their demise.

In the sumo ring, battles between teachers including Mrs. Lee, Mr. Asterino, Mr. Tomei, and Mrs. Vander-Doelen brought on shocked, but eager student onlookers, who filled the ring with roaring laughter. For a period in the afternoon, Mr. Tomei was seen strolling through the trickling mass in just his socks. Later in the day, Mr. Cocchetto bore the finale of the carnival with a pie to his face. Amidst the students watching this happen, the phrase that dominated was: “Oh my god.”

As children from the neighbouring elementary school looked on with envy at St. Augustine’s bulbous displays of fun, the Titans Carnival allowed students and teachers prove that even in the grasps of age, their inner-childs remain triumphant. A bouncy castle, a huge slide, or a sumo fight will always be hard to resist.
