Hey Titans! A fresh year means new student body representatives. In case you’re unaware, our 2019 – 2020 Student Council President is Avery Selby and our Vice President is Jonathan Woo. Together, Avery and Jonathan represent the entire student body within St. Augustine and at board meetings; bridging the gap between students and executives. They are entrusted with the tasks of promoting student leadership, amping up school spirit, and looking out for the student body’s best interests. That barely scratches the surface, and to learn more, we conducted an interview with our student leaders, complete with insight, opinions, and tips for the upcoming school year.
Q: Do you have any advice for our freshmen?
A: Getting involved is the make or break when it comes down to whether you enjoy or dislike your four years in high school. It’s how you make friends, how you volunteer and how you ultimately make a difference. You want to leave St. Augustine with no regrets and having made a footprint. You must put yourself out there and make yourself vulnerable. Take that risk. If we hadn’t we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Q: Tell our freshmen, juniors, and sophomores what it’s like to search for a school that’s perfect for you.
A: Stressful! Very difficult! Post-secondary applications are stressful, and it’s frightening to think that every test matters. You collect advice from guidance counselors, teachers and parents who want what’s best for you, but it’s hard to find something that you’re good at…that also has to be something realistic. Ultimately, you have these ideas in your head of a dream job or dream salary, but you need to realize what’s best for you and make that decision on your own. We’re all on the same boat, seniors.
Q: What do you feel is your unspoken obligation as a student body leader?
A: In our constitution, it doesn’t state that you need to be truthful, welcoming or positive but it’s unspoken that a great leader needs to set an example of what it means to be a Titan. It’s also important that we address what needs to be done here at St. Augustine and how we can create a good stepping stone for the future.
Q: What are some changes or enhancements you want to make for the school?
A: We want to upkeep and enhance the level of school spirit. The first step to achieving that is modifying the spirit point system so everyone can be involved and excited. Honestly, our school does not have as much as it can have and that makes it important that everyone comes out at every single event. We are saint Augustine, we are a family and a team and we should support one another no matter the occasion. Altogether, we need to gather and ensure that no titan walks alone.
Q: What is an upcoming event everyone can look forward to?
A: Although many events have not yet been confirmed by administration, it’s safe to say that there will be many events in the future. Just around the corner is St. Augustine’s annual semi-formal, one of the most popular events for all grades.
