Last week, November 25-29 was H.E.A.R.T. week, during which H.E.A.R.T. Committee hosted various activities including a raffle and a candy guessing contest. Matthew Kassapian (Grade 9) was the winner of the raffle, and Maria Ebeid (Grade 12) the winner of the candy guessing contest. I interviewed one of the H.E.A.R.T. committee project managers, Rachael Rieck, who helped to plan many of this year’s H.E.A.R.T. week activities.

Q: What is H.E.A.R.T. Committee’s objective?

A:            Our objective is to help children in Africa receive an education by contributing to our sister schools. As stated by the H.E.A.R.T. Committee, H.E.A.R.T. stands for, Helping Education in Africa Reaching Together. This is exactly what we are trying to do.

Q: What is H.E.A.R.T. week and why do we have it?

A:            H.E.A.R.T. week is a week full of events and activities used to raise awareness for the H.E.A.R.T. Committee. H.E.A.R.T. week also helps raise funds to support the children in Africa, specifically Uganda. We fund them so that they will be able to receive an education, while also raising money for them so that they can purchase books, pens, pencils, and other necessary school supplies.

Q: Why did you choose to join H.E.A.R.T. Committee?

A:            I joined the H.E.A.R.T. Committee because I wanted to make a difference in the world. I now understand how important education is, and to have the chance to help improve education or help provide materials for those children is really important to me. Even the little things we do–such as people buying H.E.A.R.T. Stickers–can impact those kids. When you buy H.E.A.R.T. Stickers or donate to H.E.A.R.T. Pouches, you are helping to provide textbooks and stationery for these kids, and you know that you’ve made a difference. Our education is something we all take for granted, and since joining H.E.A.R.T., I’ve learned my education is the most important tool I could ever have. By supporting H.E.A.R.T., you help provide education to these kids in Africa!

Remember: “Do your part, help out H.E.A.R.T., give them a better start!”
