After a ruthless federal election season with campaigns, debates and hopeful promises waiting for the results had us all biting our nails. With a very close run between the Conservatives and the Liberals, on October 22nd, Canada voted for Justin Trudeau to stay as our Prime Minister, but this time with a minority government.

This type of government occurs when one single party does not exceed over 51% of votes. With the tough race, Justin Trudeau won the position of Prime Minister once again but only won 39.47% of votes only 7.58% of votes ahead of the Conservatives (31.89%), which leads to our minority government. Although the Conservatives did win most popular vote, that was not enough to get them the most seats in Parliament.

Our last minority government was under Prime Minister Stephen Harper during his term from 2008-2011. This type of government allows decision making to come from all parties. The party (in this case, the Liberals) must rely on other parties’ support to keep the power. With now the Liberal party taking lead, it will be interesting to see how things will play out.

With that in mind, we are curious to see what will be in store for our country as the Parliament heads back to office on December 5th.
