“Our Roots is a club that focuses on and celebrates the ethnic and cultural diversity in our school”-Gabby Dumé

In February, we celebrate Black History Month, to remember the important people and events from the African- and Caribbean-Canadian community. The club “Our Roots” is contributing to the celebration of diversity in our school community this month and into the future. I spoke to one of the founders and executives of Our Roots, Gabby Dumé, to discuss the club.

“Our Roots is a club that focuses on and celebrates the ethnic and cultural diversity in our school,” she says. Every morning during February, Our Roots has been playing music that has a cultural significance in the Black community while explaining its origins and importance. The goal of Our Roots is to be more inclusive of people of all backgrounds.

“This is one of the reasons we started our club. It is important to celebrate ethnic diversity as well as educate and debunk cultural myths so that we students can have a better understanding of each other.” She also says that Our Roots is working on school-wide initiatives and events which are coming very soon. “Keep an eye out for it once it’s finalized!”

Our Roots meets every other Tuesday in room 246 and anyone is welcome to stop by! Remember to follow @sachsourroots for updates.
