This past Sunday, February 28 were the 2021 Golden Globe awards. With COVID-19 limiting most forms of entertainment, this ceremony celebrated the past year’s achievements in film and television, a perfect fit as many of us stay home and turn to movies and tv shows to pass the time. Hosted at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, this ceremony was unlike any other before, held virtually and hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. As a generous thank you, the Golden Globes invited frontline and essential workers as audience members to the ceremony, who all wore masks and maintained social distancing.
As mentioned before, the ceremony was drastically different this year. Nominees viewed the ceremony through virtual calls rather than being present in the audience. There was a wide range of nominations this year, from fun, comedic films like “Palm Springs” to more serious and historical films like “The Trials of the Chicago 7”. All awards were chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association or HFPA for short. Nonetheless, all the films nominated were unique and excellent watches. “Nomadland” took home best motion picture drama and its director Chloe Zhao won best director motion picture, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” taking home best motion picture drama or comedy. Lastly, the touching Pixar film “Soul” won best animated picture.
Films and television series alike this past year have seen some brilliant performances by actors and actresses. The competition this year was fierce, with Andra Day winning best actress in a motion picture drama for her role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and Chadwick Boseman winning a posthumous award for best actor in a motion picture drama for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”. For the musical and comedy category, Rosamund Pike won best actress for “I Care A Lot” and Sacha Baron Cohen won best actor for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”. Jodie Foster and Daneil Kaluuya won best supporting actor and actress respectively.
The hit Netflix series “The Crown” took home best drama series, with its stars Emma Corin and Josh O’Connor winning best actress and actor in a drama series. “Schitt’s Creek” won best comedy or musical series and starring actress Catharine O’Hara won best actress in a comedy or musical series. Jason Sudiekis won best actor in a comedy series for his role in “Ted Lasso”. John Boyega in “Small Axe” and Gillian Andersn in “The Crown” won best supporting actor and actress respectively. Anya Taylor Joy won best actress in a limited series for her role in the hit series “The Queen’s Gambit”, which itself took home the award for best limited series.
There were dozens of awards handed out during the ceremony that aren’t mentioned above, including best screenplay and best cinematography.
