During the pandemic, a time in which the world as we knew it would never be the same, we could rely on music to help us through it all. The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony celebrates and recognizes the incredible talents of the artists that prevailed and used their creativity to continue their passions for music.
This year, new records were set by Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Beyonce won four awards, bringing her total Grammy count to 28. That makes her the most awarded female artist in Grammy history. Taylor Swift made history as the first woman to win the album of the year award three times, after her album “Folklore” won on the 14th. Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy also made headlines as she took home her first Grammy at just 9! She is the second youngest person ever to win a Grammy, the top spot going to Leah Peasall, who was just 8 at the time.
In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, several artists this year have focused their music on the racial injustices that the black community faces, and have incorporated meaningful messages that inspire and empower us to stand up to create a better future. The moving and powerful message within the song “Brown Skin Girl”—for which Beyonce won best R&B performance—empowers women to embrace their skin tone and overcome the obstacles that they face in society. The song “I Can’t Breathe”, for which H.E.R won song of the year, effectively highlights the death of George Floyd at the hands of police.
This year, all of the major awards—album of the year, song of the year, and record of the year—were won by women. Dua Lipa took home best pop vocal album for “Future Nostalgia”, Megan Thee Stallion won best new artist, Billie Eilish’s “everything i wanted” took home record of the year, and H.E.R. won song of the year for “I Can’t Breathe”. Best pop duo performance was awarded to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande for “Rain On Me” and Harry Styles won best pop solo performance for “Watermelon Sugar”. Megan Thee Stallion also took home an award for best rap performance for “Savage”, which featured Beyonce, and this song won best rap song as well.
The Grammy’s also featured unforgettable performances, from Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish’s elaborate set designs to amazing performances by Roddy Ricch and Lil Baby.
