On Tuesday, April 27 and Wednesday, April 28, the Junior Reach for the Top team played their first games. Though Tuesday was a practice game, it gave the team great confidence to start off the tournament by winning 260 to 80 against Armitage Village Public School.
Wednesday was the first official game of the tournament against De La Salle High School (DLS). It was a game of twists and turns, but a successful one nevertheless. St. Augustine started off slow, ending the first round 10 points behind the opposing team — the score being 100 to 90. Despite that small setback, St. A managed to take back the scoreboard, ending the second round 200 to 110. As the game went on, DLS was catching up with some point streaks, but St. Augustine still took the win, finishing the game at 250 to 200. It was a very close and intense game, but the Junior team pulled through!
Some game highlights include Gavin Ge — a member of the St. A Junior team — scoring a tough 40 point question! There were also some challenging word puzzles and questions on the Canadian flag that left everyone stumped. With that being said, luck was on St. A’s side as they also had a warm up game that worked to their advantage. After practicing with questions about naming countries after being given the first two letters, they breezed through the real tournament game questions.
All in all, the Junior Reach for the Top team seems to be starting the tournament ready to win! Good job to all the members: Divij Dhoofar, Gavin Ge, Sarah Leung, Ananiya Narmathan, Zoe Ng, Sylvia Treki, Diego Verdin Ramirez, and Gwen Yu. And of course, thank you to the team mentors Ms. Christina Iorio and Mr. Albert Nazareth!
Good luck with the rest of the tournament — the rest of St. A is cheering you on!
