The past year has certainly been a rollercoaster for all of us. There is much anticipation for a vaccine to be available to the general public so we can all go back to our “normal” lives.
However, with the limited supply of vaccines, it has taken much longer for the rollout to reach the current age group of people 35 years and up in York Region. This is due to the fact that “COVID hotspots”, essential workers, and those who are more susceptible to contracting COVID-19 have been prioritized with the limited supply to try and prevent further spread of the virus.
For those of you asking, “when can I get my first dose?”, the government has finally announced that teenagers will soon be eligible to receive their vaccines! In March, Pfizer announced that their vaccine is safe for children over the age of 12 when originally it has only been able to be administered to those 18 years and older. Not long after Pfizer released a statement in regards to the new age limit to receive their vaccine, the province announced the highly anticipated news that a new quantity of Pfizer vaccines is to be shipped to Canada by next week. Announced by the Chief Medical Officer David Williams, Canada will be receiving a shipment of 1,000,000 doses of Pfizer per week by May, making up for the backlog in Moderna, and concerns with AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. With the news that Ontario will no longer be struggling to obtain doses, teenagers 16 and over are expected to be able to receive their first dose of Pfizer by July 1st, 2021.
