Valentine’s Day in Canada is known for a time to celebrate our love for our significant other, but unfortunately this love can sometimes hurt. In recent years, it has been shown that there is an increase in domestic violence calls received during Valentine’s Day, while the amount of support and awareness for the issue does not follow the same trend.
In the United States, one in three women, and one in four men experience some form or physical violence from their significant other which shows how often these experiences occur. Awareness needs to be made, as a school community, to understand how to have healthy relationships with not only your intimate partner, but with friends and family as well.
St. Augustine’s Matt 25 wanted to bring light to domestic abuse within romantic relationships. For the week of February 22-25, Matt 25 will be holding the “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” Campaign — a series of events, including posting Valentine’s Day cards on the school walls containing statistics, providing informative pamphlets at guidance, and lastly spreading the word through announcements with statistics and facts.
Learn more about this issue by participating in Matt 25’s campaign, and spread awareness with your friends! Stay safe this Valentine’s day, and remember that if you are in an abusive situation, always tell somebody you trust to help combat the issue of domestic violence.
