Member of Parliament for the riding of Markham-Unionville, Paul Chiang, and the York Region Liberal Caucus hosted a Crime Prevention Town Hall meeting via ZOOM on March 7.
Several members of the York Regional Police were in attendance, sharing tips on how to stay safe from criminal activity and answering questions from the other MP’s in attendance, which included Hon. Mary Ng, Hon. Helena Jaczek, Majid Jowhari, Francesco Sorbara, Leah Taylor Roy, Tony Van Bynen, and Paul Chiang.
To open the meeting, Constable Brian Hinds from #5 District Markham Station shared tips on how to prevent theft in your cars, with the #1 tip being to lock your doors. During the winter months, he advised not leaving the key in the car while warming it up. As well, he articulated the importance of being aware; wearing headphones and being on devices increases the risk of a car hitting you or an assault occurring. Cst. Hinds also shared information about the YRP’s Distracted Driving Initiative, which included educating youth about the dangers of distracted driving.
Next came the question period, where MP’s asked questions about concerns in their area. MP of Markham-Stouffville and House of Commons minister Helena Jaczek inquired about women’s safety and the increase in domestic and intimate partner violence during COVID.
Superintendent Larry Wilson did not hesitate to mention the Yellow Brick House’s crisis hotlines and information, in addition to YRP’s involvement with the York Region organization. Cst. Hinds added that the police have seen an increase in calls related to domestic violence and abuse, and have dealt a lot with youth and boyfriend-girlfriend relationships. He advises people to constantly evaluate relationships, and reminds that you can always talk to the York Regional Police–especially when there is a chance of someone being victimized or there might be a problem arising. Lastly, Hinds advised everyone to look out for warning signs of an abusive relationship, including a peer being isolated from their family and friends or their partner constantly wanting to be with them.
Remember that Town Hall meetings are always open to the public and for those interested in community engagement! Look out for upcoming events on your local MP’s social media accounts.
