As of March 21, 2022, the Ontario government bid farewell to the provincial mask mandates in most places. Factors such as high administration rates of the booster vaccination dose in the province and more booster vaccinations arriving shortly contributed to the government’s overall decision to remove the mandates. The mandates commenced in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic first began and masks had to be worn in all public settings to help stop the spread of the virus. Masks will still be required and mandated in public transit, long-term care facilities, and shelters until further notice. Additionally, essential service city employees in high-risk settings must continue to wear a mask until further notice. Despite mask mandates ending, Ontario citizens are allowed to continue to wear a mask if they choose to do so for their own protection and for the protection of other immunocompromised citizens. Ontario citizens are hoping that the removal of this mandate goes smoothly and safely; if it does, this may be the beginning of new normalcy.
