For many of us, November 11, is the day when we remember our fallen soldiers who have done everything they can to keep the peace in all of our countries. But one day that not many people focus on is Vimy Ridge Day. This day is on April 9 and is a special day in Canada for everyone to commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge which took place in World War 1. Victory on Vimy Ridge was not easy. The soldiers went through a lot of failed attempts and there was a lot of planning needed to finally make Vimy Ridge a victory. Many British and French soldiers lost their lives trying to take Vimy Ridge back. Our Canadian soldiers, however, proved to be strong and effective and were able to gain the victory on Vimy Ridge but many lives were lost to get to the victory. The Canadian Corps sacrificed all that they had to capture Vimy Ridge and on April 12, the Canadians were finally successful. We must remember those who fought for our freedom and those who defended our country no matter if it cost them their lives. We often choose the day to remember and honour these courageous people on November 11 but we should start observing this special day on the 9th too. This day many years ago was a day of remembrance for a victory that was hard to achieve and resulted in many losses of life. We should remember our soldiers every day for their efforts which gave us the ability to live in a free and peaceful country today.
