Since February 24, 2022, over 7 million citizens have escaped Ukraine. The country’s dangerous situation has proved to be not only threatening towards the country’s citizens, but also their animals. Some Ukranians are risking their lives by staying in areas being invaded to take care of their animals. While others either leave them in shelters or abandon them on the streets. Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine’s second oldest zoo, Mykolaiv zoo, has been hit by eight missiles. The zoo’s director has said that transporting the 4,000 animals inhabited there is not possible, so virtual tickets have been sold across the world to help sustain the zoo. The tickets cover the expenses of food for animals and hiring human helpers. Fortunately, animals are being helped by other countries. Funds have been provided by Poland to give animals vaccinations and shelter. PETA Germany, an organization fighting for animal rights, assisted by offering blankets, animal food, and their support at the border.
How can you help?
You can support animals in Ukraine by donating to a variety of nonprofit organizations.
- UAnimals is dedicated to protecting animals from abuse and preventing their exploitation. They financially assist shelters and send them food. At this time, they are focusing on treating animals in shelters and rehabilitation centers.
- Sirius, among Ukraine’s largest animal shelters, shelters cats and dogs without homes. You can adopt abandoned animals or contribute as a volunteer.
