When is Pride Month?

Pride month is celebrated in June – hence, the majority of queer events happen in June. For instance, on June 23rd Prism Festival Pride 2022 begins, and on June 26th Toronto will be hosting an enormous pride parade that will travel along Yonge St. from Bloor St. to Dundas St.

What is Pride Month?

On June 28 of 1969, the Stonewall Riot began in New York City. The queer community protested for days at Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn – a very popular gay bar – for several days, for their human rights, and for the repeal of laws banning homosexuality.

The following year, on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riot, the LGBTQIA2+ community marched from the Stonewall Inn to Central Park. Then in 1971, cities around the world began hosting their own Pride parades, and ever since the global LGBTQIA2+ community uses the month of June to celebrate pride and the progress that they and those who support them have made to achieve equity and equality for everyone. An appreciable measure of this progress would be the evolving recognition by society of self-identity represented by the LGBTQUIA2+.

How do I join the fight toward equality?

You could simply support small businesses and works owned and created by the LGBTQIA2+ community, and also by making donations to LGBTQIA2+ community-run organizations, such as the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project.

“Pride Month presents an opportunity – and an obligation – to reflect on why our LGBTQIA2+ community matters,” states Joe English, the founder of “Hope in a Box” – a non-profit organization that ensures an LGBTQIA2+ curriculum is taught in the public school system.

Pride month is the designated month each year that ensures pride is recognized to promote a society that is inclusive and capable of providing equity and equality for everyone.
