In the sports world, the NBA, NFL, and NHL seasons are heading into full tilt while the MLB world series is just coming to a close. Soccer fans are excited as the FIFA World Cup is nearing, yet that is not the only global sport event approaching.

Every two to four years, the top 16 cricket nations around the world meet up for the clash of the ages, on one of the world’s largest stages – The Cricket World Cup. Whether it be at Lord’s Stadium, Kensington’s Oval, Eden Gardens of Kolkata or, the Melbourne Cricket grounds, tens of thousands of fans from all over the world await various countries who battle it out for the championship. This year, matches are being played at seven different grounds in Australia. The notable grounds include: world-famous Adelaide Oval, Melbourne Cricket Ground and, Sydney Cricket Ground. All grounds have fan capacities of over 45,000, which is larger than the mighty Fenway Park!

This year, the front runners for the title are India, England, Australia and, a small surprise, New Zealand. Cricket games can be shocking with the last-second comebacks, brutal losses or upsets teams have to face. However, the odds are unpredictable when a great cricket nation such as England is bested by an underrated Irish team! Speaking of great nations, India played a magnificent match against Pakistan on October 23rd. All Pakistan needed was to stay awake for the last three to four balls and they could have squeaked by but, in an unpredictable turn of events, India’s men in blue won in comeback fashion.

Currently, England has secured a semi-final spot however, all it takes a team such as South Africa, India or New Zealand is a final match win to secure their semi-final spot. I’ll be rooting for India to take this year’s cup however, anything can happen in the Cricket World Cup.
