This past week, students from grade 10 business classes came together to work on the Plato’s closet sale. They partnered with Plato’s Closet, a second hand consignment store, to bring a clothing fair to our school. We were offered some trendy clothing pieces for an affordable price, while the students were given the opportunity to have real world experience in the different areas of managing a business.

As the holiday season approaches us, this initiative was a great opportunity to buy some gifts for your friends and family at an affordable price. The best part of this initiative was the promotion of sustainability when it comes to fashion, as well as gift giving. The holiday season is a busy time when it comes to over consumption, and it is important to keep our planet in mind when planning gifts. Giving second hand, but good quality, gifts is a great way to make your friends happy while also supporting our environment. Take a look at our recent article  on overconsumption for a closer look at what this means during the holiday season.

Overconsumption is very prevalent in the fashion industry. Many people feel the need to buy new clothing, and as trends come and go every month, these perfect clothing pieces go to waste. Not only are they made in poor conditions, but they then end up polluting the environment even more, while some people lack clothing. Supporting secondhand consignment or thrift stores is a great way to lower your personal eco footprint, and also take a step in improving the sustainability of the fashion industry.
