As the famous day of February approaches, most people yearn for the long weekend– to hang out with friends, to catch up on homework, or to get some sleep. However, one should truly reflect on the real significance of this day is. Family Day is an annual tradition that holds an opportunity to feel the immense gratitude of spending quality time and developing intimate connections with our families.

Conventionally, many people see a family with a mother, a father, and some children. Yet, this illustration does paint the full picture. A number of households can be led by single parents, same sex couples, seniors, or even a group of close friends. Not all are of blood relation, but are bonded together by the very nature of love. Family members are there through thick and thin, such as supporting new mothers and their babies or offering condolences for a grievous death. This deep sense of connection and fulfillment leads to longer, healther lives and an increased sense of happiness.

But this is not always the case. As reported by the Canadian General Social Survey, about 4% of those surveyed described having no close relatives. About 31% of those living alone reported having fewer than three close relatives. These people stand a much higher risk for developing depression, addiction, and cognitve issues due to extreme loneliness and lack of family ties. Unfortunately, some people still take their families for granted.

Instead of scrolling through social media or staying in your room all day this long weekend, perhaps go on a trip, play some trivia, or take a walk with your family in nature. Recognize how your relatives have been there for you, and defocus from past disappointments and struggles. Be appreciative of the unconditional, enriching sense of love you receive and embrace the true joy that your family brings. Have a Happy 2023 Family Day Weekend!
