In an environment where greed, apathy, and dishonesty are popular choices, aggression is unfortunately common. However, we as titans are capable of making change to this school by responding attentively to what is in front of us instead of disregarding it. In today’s world, it is easy to be a bystander in such situations due to one’s desire for popularity or need to refrain from entanglements. That does not mean we should conform to this, but instead, strive to be upstanders and help one another in the process, no matter the sacrifice. In this article, the importance of transitioning from a bystander to an upstander will be explored, and practical tips on making this shift in daily life will be provided.

Recognizing the Power of an Upstander

To begin, one must be aware of their own actions’ power to be an upstander. A simple act of kindness, which can range from buying a person’s cafeteria cookie to initiating a conversation with an individual, all create a ripple effect that makes our school a safer space. For instance, standing up for an oppressed student may at first seem to be a moral yet frightening choice. Little do we know, we are actually earning the respect of others through this action and inspiring them to do the same. That is why our consciousness of power is so essential to being an upstander.

The Power of Leading by Example

When you decide to be a person of dignity, you set a positive example for others. Your actions not only help in immediate situations but also contribute to making the school a place where empathy, kindness, and justice are habits. Suppose you become a frequent upstander, others will take notice of this clear contrast from what is ordinary of a student, and either be encouraged or the opposite. Ultimately, it is their choice, but your ability to gain their attention is one that alone will have long-lasting effects on your character in a positive light. In conclusion, we should seize the opportunity to create a school environment characterized with positive traits through being upstanders.
