(“Change to legal guarding position recommended for men’s basketball”)
As the year winds down, the St. Augustine Titans have shown they are just ramping up. With the thrilling season of basketball in session, the school spirit in the air at St. Augustine High School is soaring. The senior boys take to the court every week going against different schools in York Region.
Starting off their season in late November, the boys put up a fight playing against Unionville High School. Their first game left the Titans walking away with a win, ending the game with a score of 70-63. Since then the boys have played against different schools such as Markville Secondary School, Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy, Markham District High School, and St. Brother Andre Catholic High School. As of December 20 of 2023, through triumph and loss, the boys hold a 3-3 record to their name with their recent game against Bur Oak High School ending with a score of 71-53, leaving them tying their wins and losses.
I recently had the opportunity to interview some of the boys and was able to get some insight on how the season is going so far. Number 6, Matthew Mendoza, on the basketball team says “I think our team has the talent to go all the way”. When asking him about the team’s dynamic he mentions “St. Augustine is a family”. I also had the chance to speak with number 14, Diego Samson, who says “It’s not how you start but it’s how you finish”. These words of inspiration from both of the boys is a true testament to how being cohesive can lead to success.
With two more games in the regular season, the boys will have to keep up the hard work on the court to maintain a spot in the playoffs.
