In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly established February 20th as the World Day of Social Justice – a day to raise awareness about economic progression in state countries during a time in which global markets are wielded through recent globalization. Catered toward the increase of social protections, employment opportunities and constructive dialogue between governments, employers and their employees, the UN has been actively creating policies that assure individuals’ fundamental rights and freedoms to enable global harmony and justice.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is one of the most significant agencies of the United Nations, adopted the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization in 2008. This framework was based on the idea of achieving social integration and improved labour markets for workers in the UN’s member states via globalization. By doing so, countries of developing and vulnerable economic status have been experiencing improved overall quality of life and decreased social unrest.

To this day, there remains a significant imbalance in economic stability and security in various regions of the world. The General Assembly recognizes that the respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms cannot be overlooked. By celebrating each and every step forward in this modernizing society, those united in the name of fairness and equality work towards outlawing practices that do not serve as beneficial to the world’s economy.
