Nepotism has been prevalent for a long period of time in professional areas such as entertainment or politics. But how about in sports? Familial advantages have been a hot button in sports, especially in leagues like the NBA where that trend has only been furthered along by the recent rise of Bronny James, son of NBA superstar LeBron James. The two have just played on the same court, which, in itself, was another milestone–the first father-and-son act to appear in an NBA game–a feat that has variously been greeted with applause and debate from fans.

Some critics have quickly pointed out that Bronny has had an easy road to the NBA paved with privilege, with his unprecedentedly famous father touting influence on his son’s opportunities. Most would say that any other player without the same caliber of parents would have to struggle even harder, no matter how talented they are. Yet, it should be noted that Bronny has put years into his craft, showing undeniable work ethic and dedication.

Notwithstanding the criticisms of nepotism, this is indeed a historically monumental moment for LeBron and Bronny to take the court together. It speaks not only to personal success in regard to the James family but also to a momentous occasion in the league, which draws into question just how much familial connections impact sports drafts and athlete development.

Although Bronny’s rise is considered by some as a case of nepotism, he has definitely invested his fair share of hard work. As the sports industry keeps on evolving, the debate centered on legacy pull and merit will always have that in the balance. The James family story is an interesting case of how ties to family and individual effort can make or break the future in sports.
