As we dive into another semester, our STA alumni are making waves in universities across the country. This time, we’re heading over to McMaster University to catch up with Suhana Jhamnani, who’s navigating her first year in Social Sciences and Commerce.

Suhana: “Hi, my name is Suhana Jhamnani. I am currently in my first year at McMaster University, studying Social Sciences and Commerce.”

Suhana has been loving her university experience so far, and when I asked her about her program, she had nothing but great things to say.

Suhana: “I love my program and what I do. The courses are very interesting, and I am learning a lot of new things as I go.”

When asked about specific pros and cons of the program, Suhana could list a couple.

Suhana: “First year is general, meaning students have time to think about what they want to major in. Another pro is the large variety of intro courses you can choose from. A con is a competition. In some majors, you need to maintain an 80 average, which seems kind of hard as a first-year still trying to get used to Uni life”

Suhana’s advice for high school students is simple but important:

“Fully enjoy your Grade 12 year. Enjoy every single thing, because it will all be different next year—for the better and the worse.”

University professors can be a bit eccentric, but Suhana’s Politics professor takes things to the next level:

“My professor used to chug a can of Coke every morning at 8:30 AM and then run around the lecture hall as he explained concepts and definitions.”

For foodies at McMaster, Suhana has a top-tier recommendation:

“I recently discovered this mini café in the Applied Health Science building. It has freshly brewed iced tea, coffee, chicken bites, bowls, build-your-own salads, and pizza.”

Continuing our journey through the paths of STA alumni, we now head to Seneca College, where Siena is bringing her creative vision to life in the Fashion Arts program. With aspirations of becoming a fashion designer and launching her own brand, she is making the most of her first year in this hands-on, industry-focused program.

“Hi! My name’s Siena, and I’m in my first year at Seneca’s Fashion Arts program.”

She spoke about her feelings of her program.

Siena: “I love my program because of the endless opportunities, such as participating in my school’s yearly fashion show. I’ve already learned so much—pattern making, textiles, sewing, and designing—all of which will be incredibly useful in the future.”

The Fashion Arts program is designed to provide students with real-world experience, and Siena appreciates how much she has already gained in her first year.

With amazing professors, a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, and access to advanced technology, Siena enjoys the hands-on learning her program offers. Plus, the fact that it’s only three years means she can enter the fashion industry sooner.

However, she admits that the early morning classes and lack of days off can be challenging, making time management an essential skill.

Siena encourages Grade 12s to fully enjoy their last year, take advantage of opportunities, and not stress too much about the future. “A lot changes after high school,” she says, “but in the end, you’ll figure out what you’re meant to do. It’s not as scary as it seems—just take a breath and enjoy the journey.” Oh, and take lots of pictures!

When it comes to grabbing a bite, Siena’s go-to spot is Subway—a convenient and reliable choice between her busy schedule of classes and creative projects.
