Netflix’s and Sony’s own animated blockbuster, K-pop Demon Hunters, has taken the world by storm, and not just because of its wild premise. The film tells the story of a group called HUNTR/X, a trio consisting of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who are secretly demon hunters while performing at numerous stadiums as K-pop stars. Their main rivals, the Saja Boys, led by male lead  Jinu, charm the crowds while secretly working for Gwi Ma, the force of darkness. What started out as a quirky idea from the director, Maggie Kang, has turned into one of the year’s biggest cultural obsessions, blending supernatural adventure, glitzy choreography, and catchy pop anthems. 

Music as a Weapon: Battle-Read Performances

Since its release on August 23, 2025, K-pop Demon Hunters has sparked sing-along screenings, TikTok dance challenges, and heated debates in our own cafeteria over which K-pop group is best. Students say part of the appeal lies in how the movie treats music as a weapon as well as a passion. Each performance doubles as a battle sequence, complete with neon spell weapons, and intricate dances moved timed to the exact moment to defeat the dark forces of demons. Watching the three girls fight with glowing weapons while belting out high notes makes the film feel like a concert and an action epic rolled into one. 

Soundtrack Success: Chart-Topping Hits

The soundtrack is proving just as unstoppable as the story. One of their main songs, “Golden”, sung by HUNTR/X, debuted at the top of Korea’s weekly streaming charts, and it is still holding strong on Spotify’s Global Top 50. Its soaring chorus about shining through obstacles and telling the girls’ personal stories has become an anthem for students gearing up for exams and sports events. Meanwhile, the mischievous Saja Boys scored a surprise hit with “Soda Pop,” a bubblegum-bright track that hides a sly and villainous edge. That song jumped into the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 5 and has inspired countless dance covers on social media. Even secondary tracks like “Takedown” and the haunting “Your Idol” have been racking up millions of streams. 

Adding fuel to the frenzy, popular influencers across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have also jumped on the trend. From dance tutorials to reaction videos, they have been flooding feeds with clips of themselves either recreating choreography from the movie, singing one of the famous songs, or even cosplaying as the characters. Viral challenges like the “Soda Pop” Dance Challenge or the “Golden” High Note Challenge have been viewed millions of times, ensuring that even people who have not watched the film yet are already familiar with its signature moves. Everywhere you go, it seems someone outside is practicing the dances that made the film famous.

Cosplays all around the world

The influence has not stopped with just song and dance. Costumes from the film have also exploded in popularity, with fans dressed up as Rumi, Jinu, Mira, and other characters, not only for cosplay conventions, but sometimes, for everyday content. Replica jackets, Funko Pops, cosplays, and even stickers are appearing on many shopping websites, creating the impression that their little online store has been transformed into its own mini HUNTR/X concert. South Korea has already planned a K-pop Demon Hunters-themed park at Everland, one of the country’s most famous theme parks. 

What the film was about behind the song and dance 

Critics praise the film for its inventive mix of genres, crediting its success to top-tier animation, tongue-in-cheek humor, and a soundtrack produced by respected K-pop songwriters. More importantly, the story resonates because it mirrors the pressure many young people feel: balancing personal identity, expectations, and big dreams while facing hidden challenges. The movie’s message — that you can face your demons and still shine on stage — has clearly struck a chord.
