For some, the thought of running is nauseating and exhausting, to say the least. Having to run miles a day, 3 days a week simply sounds like a cruel punishment. For others, however, a jog around the block is an incredible feeling, serving to provide stress relief, feelings of accomplishment, and not to mention health benefits as well. I was able to sit down with one of St. A’s Cross Country OFSAA Qualifiers, who placed third in this year’s regionals – Ria Jayaram.

How many years have you been doing cross country for?

This is my second year doing cross country. I started it in grade 11 have continued to participate in grade 12. I actually used to run short distances when I was younger and then in grade 10, I tried the 3K race just for fun and really liked it.

Is this your first year attending OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association)?

Yes! I got 4th place at the YRAA’s (York Region Athletic Association) this year. Last year I was one off from making it so this year I really wanted to go.

What do you enjoy most about being on the cross country team?

Honestly, I just enjoy running. It’s liberating for me. Running is my way of relieving stress and it’s overall just really fun.

As a runner, what is your biggest tip you have for training?

My biggest tip is to run more often and run longer than you have to. I would try to work on running in harder conditions too, like hills and in the grass. That really helps.

What would you say to anyone who wants to start cross country?

Just do it. Definitely be prepared for the hills though! Starting out won’t be easy, but cross country is definitely a lot of fun.
